Boats as art: on the ceiling of a luxury hotel

The four boats suspended from the roof of its lobby at the Grand Hyatt Dubai add nautical flair to the entire lobby atrium. The traditional Arabian dhows, used to ferry cargo across the Dubai Creek for hundreds of years, are the centerpiece of the hotel's massive lobby and weigh five tons apiece.

Although they were not specifically designed to be used, in all probability, should the roof be unbolted and the dhows lowered into water, they would be just as capable of floating as Dubai's more conventional dhows, according to the hotel manager.
