For a period of 10 years after boats are built, federal law requires builders to recall and repair any that are found to be in non-compliance with Coast Guard regulations or that have safety defects. The law, however, only requires that recall notices be sent to original owners. Given that most vessels change ownership at least once during the first 10 years, builders often have difficulty reaching subsequent owners.

The National Recall Alert Registry created by BoatU.S. helps bridge the gap between boatbuilders and owners, according to the group. The online system allows boaters to register their vessels so a builder can contact them directly in the event of a recall. Consumers also can view a list of current recalls as well as visit the Coast Guard’s recall database.
