Boatyard dogs can strut their stuff at Maine show

Organizers of the annual Maine Boats & Harbors Show are busy planning this year’s event, scheduled for Aug. 13 to 15 on the waterfront in Rockland.

Last year’s inaugural event attracted some 10,000 people, who came to see the show’s unique mix of sail- and powerboats, art, furniture, food and music.

Potential competitors at the Second Annual National Championship Boatyard Dog Trials need to apply before June 30. Entry information can be found at

The crowd-pleasing competition pits 10 canines and their handlers against each other. The dogs run a dockside obstacle course, leap into the water to retrieve a stick, and jump in and out of a tippy boat.

Contestants will be notified by mid-July. The overall winner will become Boatyard Dog of the Year, and will be featured in an issue of Maine Boats & Harbors magazine.
