Bridge-crashing cargo ship cleared to leave accident scene

The Delta Mariner cargo ship was moved downstream to shallower waters to continue salvage operations and a safety zone was lifted following an allision Jan. 26 that destroyed one section of the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge in Kentucky.

“The salvage operations are proceeding as planned, and it is a significant milestone that the ship has now been relocated downriver and clear of the Eggner (sic) Ferry Bridge,” said Cmdr. Claudia Gelzer, commanding officer of Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Paducah.

The Coast Guard has also reopened the river up to recreational boats.
