Australian archaeologist Tom Vosmer and his crew of seven sought to prove that traders some 5,000 years ago could have traveled by boat 500 miles across the Indian Ocean from Oman to India. So they constructed a boat like those of that era: a 40-foot sailing vessel made of such Bronze Age materials as reeds, wood, rope and tar, with wool sails. The vessel, named Magan, had no engine but was fitted with radar and some safety equipment.

The crew set off last year on what was to be a two-week voyage, but the vessel almost immediately began taking on water, according the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. An Omani navy support ship picked up the crew after Magan capsized and sank. The team has vowed to try the experiment again.
