JUNE 2 — A Wisconsin family was enjoying the Memorial Day holiday on the bay of Green Bay when a stray bullet struck their boat inches below the swim platform.
“No one would think you go out with the family to have fun, enjoy nice weather on the holiday weekend and have someone in the family almost killed,” says Karla Linssen in a Green Bay Press Gazette news report.
The Linssens had dropped anchor east of Little Tail Point, near Suamico, Wis., when the incident happened, the news report says. Karla Linssen’s husband, Jim, was standing on the boat near the spot where the bullet hit. Karla Linssen was in the cabin and the couple’s 7-year-old daughter was swimming off the stern.
“[The bullet] could have hit the gas tank or any one of us,” Karla Linssen says in the report. Officers with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department found a group of men on land nearby that apparently had been using a rifle to try and skip bullets off the water, the news report says. Two men, both in their early 20s, were arrested.
“One of the neat things about boating is every excursion is different and always adventurous,” Jim Linssen says in the report, “but we never bargained for an adventure like that.”
