Canadian solo sailor rescued off coast of Australia

A Victoria, British Columbia, sailor was rescued off the southern coast of Western Australia after his yacht encountered swells more than 30 feet.

The 62-year-old Canadian skipper left the Coast Harbourside Hotel and Marina in James Bay in the west coast province in March 2008 on a solo around-the-world voyage aboard Kekuli, a Spencer 35 sloop.

While in the rough seas on Monday, the engine separated from its mounting, prompting Lim to set off his emergency beacon.

Winds gusting at 50 knots made the rescue challenging, according to a report from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
