Celebrity boat donation

MARCH 2 — Outspoken radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger last week became the latest celebrity to donate a sailboat to California’s Orange Coast College School of Sailing and Seamanship.

Schlessinger, known for her “Dr. Laura” call-in radio show, delivered her 58-foot yacht, On the Air, to the school last Friday, according to a report in California’s Daily Pilot newspaper. Located on NewportHarbor, the school has since renamed the boat Bluefin. School director Brad Avery says the boat will be used for offshore sailing instruction.

“We’re very grateful to Dr. Laura for a magnificent gift for our program,” Avery says in the report.

In July 2005 Roy E. Disney, a former Walt Disney Co. board member and retired ocean racer, donated his 86-foot CBTF MaxZ86, Pyewacket, to the school. Two months earlier, California businessman Jim Kilroy gave the school his 80-foot maxi racing yacht, Kialoa III. Former Yugoslavian president Milan Panic gave the school a boat in 2003.

“It was my baby,” Schlessinger says of her former yacht. “Now it’s their baby — and it’s a good child. It’s well-behaved.”
