Cellular-satellite hybrid phone debuts

A new product launched this week aims to keep boaters and outdoors enthusiasts connected. The TerreStar Genus is the world's first dual-network smart phone and the ultimate backup insurance during horrific weather, or for anyone who lives in a weak cellular location.

Dual-network means it runs on the normal AT&T cellular network as well as the TerreStar satellite backup network. This eliminates dead zones. Take it out in a boat up to 200 miles off the United States coast and the phone will have a signal.

The only place the satellite network doesn't work is indoors or underground. However, the cellular signal will still operate like a normal cellular phone operates on the AT&T network.

Check out this video on how to use the Genus compared to a cellular-only device.
