With 11 people reportedly rescued since May 2003, the Coast Guard Office of Search and Rescue has honored BoatU.S. for its EPIRB rental program.
“The program has rented hundreds of beacons through the generous support of BoatU.S. members who believe in the usefulness of these life-saving devices,” says Ruth Wood, president of the BoatU.S. Foundation.
The 6-year-old program makes the emergency beacons available for $50 a week, and is funded by voluntary contributions from BoatU.S. members.
This summer three Maryland sailors homeward bound from the Annapolis-Bermuda Race activated their rented EPIRB in a storm and were rescued by the Coast Guard 120 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C. www.boatus.com/foun dation/epirb
