Members of the Chincoteague Charter Boat Association in Virginia held their third annual "Take A Kid Fishing Day," an event that teaches youths ages 7 to 13 fishing basics, boat safety and navigation.
"We're experienced captains, so there's no better person to learn from," Capt. Charlie Koski, of Island Queen Inland Charters, said in a story at www.delmarvanow.com.
Koski and eight captains met with a group of 22 children Aug. 1.
Gary Palmieri of Franklin, Mass., and his sons, Owen and Kyle, joined Koski on his spacious pontoon boat for their first charter fishing trip. Koski shared several tricks of the trade as the young boys fished, such as watching out for a croaker's sharp gill plate as you take the fish off the hook.
When the charterboats returned to the harbor about noon, every boy and girl came back smiling, holding their plastic buckets containing different species.
The association plans to hold its next "Take A Kid Fishing Day" the week after the 88th annual Pony Penning next summer.
