The fate of Coast Guardsman Paul Ramos, on trial for the 2009 death of 8-year-old Anthony DeWeese on San Diego Bay, could rest on one small detail: was a stern light lit that night?

After nearly two weeks of testimony in a rare Coast Guard general court-martial, the prosecution, defense and even the jury appeared to be still reaching for signs that could show definitively whether the stern light on the DeWeese family ski boat was visible before a 33-foot Coast Guard patrol boat collided with the craft.
