Coast Guard seeks assistance with possible hoax

The Coast Guard station in Portland, Maine, is seeking the public's assistance in finding the source of a possible hoax mayday caller April 21 in the vicinity of the Penobscot Bay area.

The Coast Guard Sector Northern New England command center received a mayday call on VHF channel 16 at 1:18 p.m., of an adult male stating, "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. Help me, I'm on dry land."

Hoax distress calls placed to the Coast Guard are classified as a felony punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
