The piers at the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, N.J., were built when the Navy had the base in 1941. Only two of them are left, and a good portion of one was condemned in December after strong winds broke one of the water lines to the pier. The movement of the wooden pier caused concerns that fuel, electrical, sewage and other lines could burst.
But a fix may be on the way. Money for the $11 million project is in President Barack Obama's proposed budget for fiscal 2012, which begins Oct. 1.
