Commandant wants flexibility for Coast Guard

Adm. Thad Allen, commandant of the Coast Guard, said he has tried to make the Coast Guard into a flexible organization that adapts to its environment.

"I'm trying to create a new form of organization ... that can continue to change and evolve," says Allen, the Coast Guard commandant. "Modernization is only the work list we have right now."

Allen will finish his four-year tour as commandant May 25, and he reflected on what he has tried to achieve as the head of the service in a speech Thursday at the Coast Guard Academy. Allen will most likely only address the cadets once more at commencement.
