Congressman says fishing industry is in crisis

Terming new federal fishing regulations "ridiculous," U.S. Rep. Frank Guinta promised local fishermen he'd work across party lines to develop a game plan to try to save the already endangered commercial fishing industry.

Two months into his first term representing New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District, which encompasses the Seacoast, Guinta, R-Manchester, met with fishermen and their representatives yesterday at Seabrook's Yankee Fisherman's Cooperative.

The self-avowed small-business advocate who opposes too much government regulation said he realized during his campaign the commercial fishing industry in New Hampshire is in crisis.

"What I'm hearing is that you don't have much time," he told the crowd of people whose livelihoods are dependent on the sea.
