Costa Concordia: The rules of evacuating a ship

The sinking of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia — and in particular, the decision-making of the captain — has been the top story for media outlets worldwide during the weekend.

While news agencies have approached the dramatic story from nearly every concieveable angle, BBC News used the story to examine the venerable maritime custom of “women and children first” when evacuating a vessel.
