Crash sends boat sailing across highway

A 26-foot boat sailed across Newport, Ore.’s Highway 101 on Saturday when the trailer it was on broke apart, police said.

The crash happened as a Ford SUV towed the trailer and boat north along Highway 101. The trailer started swaying side to side before it broke apart, causing the SUV to spin in a circle.

Neither the driver or his passenger was injured. The boat suffered heavy damage; the trailer was totaled, according to authorities, who said the crash was caused by the age and condition of the trailer, and a load beyond its rated carrying capacity.
