Crew of plastic boat to pay for rescue

The crewmembers of the catamaran Plastiki will reimburse the Mooloolaba Coast Guard in Australia for towing them into the Sunshine Coast from 200 nautical miles offshore.

The Plastiki - a catamaran made of 12,500 plastic bottles - was towed to Mooloolaba after its main sail was damaged off the Queensland coast.

Mooloolaba Coast Guard commander John Annabell said the towing of the Plastiki was not classed as an emergency, but was a rescue because the crew had difficulties staying on course.
