Crewmember charged with choking captain

A commercial towboat worker is facing federal charges that he choked his captain into unconsciousness as the vessel was traveling along the Mississippi River near St. Louis.

The accused crewman allegedly threatened the captain, who then contacted his dispatcher to request they call law enforcement, according to a report by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The 30-year-old accused then pulled the unnamed captain away from the wheel and choked him into unconsciousness, causing the vessel Miranda Paige to veer hard to starboard and head toward the Illinois shoreline, according to an affidavit filed by the Coast Guard.
