A crewmember on a Gloucester, Mass., herring boat died at sea after donning diving gear and going beneath the 164-foot mid-water trawler in an effort to clear a trawl net that had become snagged on a rudder or prop after a tow on Georges Bank.

The man was reportedly a certified diver who volunteered to attempt to clear the trawl net that had become fouled on the screw or rudder after a paired tow with another Mullen boat, the Osprey.
