Dances with dogs

A light-footed canine took home the gold at the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show’s fifth annual World Championship Boatyard Dog Trials.

Kylie Davis, a black-and-white border collie, likes boats, dancing and the Beach Boys. She also happens to be a World Champion boatyard dog.

Dancing her way to the head of the pack, Kylie won the coveted “Pup Cup” for her spins, leaps, weaves and jumps to the sounds of the legendary summertime rock-and-roll band during the fifth annual Boats, Homes & Harbors Show held Aug. 10 to 12 in Rockland, Maine.

Second place, for their “Chessie Water Ballet” went to Kelvin and Cody Penn, Chesapeake Bay golden retrievers. Last year’s champion, Soldado Woollett, a mutt from Puerto Rico, came in third. Each dog received a collar decorated with artwork by artist Eric Hopkins.

Kylie will get to keep the cup for a year as well as being featured in the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine Boatyard Dog column.

The show drew a crowd of 13,000 over the course of three days, with around 70 boats on display.
