Did tall ship sail off with state money?

Connecticut State Rep. Diana Urban has demanded a full accounting of the millions of state dollars that have been invested in the tall ship Amistad.

The Day of New London reports that Amistad America of Hamden has lost its non-profit status with the IRS. It has leased the ship to the Ocean Classroom Foundation, a nonprofit in Maine.

Urban, a Democrat from North Stonington and an economist, asked for a detailed accounting.

She got, in reply, a letter of less than 160 words from the state Department of Economic and Community Development. The letter said that more than $1.4 million had been spent on the Amistad in the past four years, plus a bond authorization of $450,000 for repairs to the ship.
