Discarded EPIRB launches ‘rescue’

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined the owner of a commercial fishing vessel for falsely activating (a crewmember tossed an old EPIRB overboard to get rid of it) an EPIRB, which resulted in the transmission of false distress communications. The $5,500 fine follows 3.5 hours of Coast Guard fixed-wing response time (costing $35,000) to investigate the distress signal.
