Feeling guilty about leaving your dog home when you spend a gorgeous summer day on the water? Here are six tips from www.tripswithpets.com for helping you turn your pooch into a salty dog.

1. Invest in a canine PFD. Even good swimmers can panic if they’re suddenly thrown overboard. Put it on at home so that your dog can get used to wearing it.

2. Help first-timers get their sea legs by letting them explore the boat while it’s docked. Start with short outings and gradually build up.

3. Keep your pet cool by providing a shady spot and plenty of fresh water. Thirsty dogs might try to drink sea or lake water, which could make them sick.

4. Include your marina address and slip number on your dog’s identification tag.

5. Make sure all shots are up to date, and bring copies of your dog’s health records along in case you need proof when going ashore.

6. Call ahead to be sure your marina or destination allows pets.
