European festival culminates in a boat-burning bonanza

Every year, thousands of Scots gather for the Up Helly Aa fire festival — an homage to the country's Viking heritage that culminates with a dramatic boat burning.

The event began Tuesday, when strong winds and heavy rain battered almost 1,000 torch-bearing participants as they marched through the streets of Shetland, Scotland, to pipe and brass-band music.
