Failed fishing-boat scam lands crew in prison

It was supposed to be the perfect crime: Sail offshore on a 75-foot fishing boat and sink it where nobody will find it. The payoff would be a $400,000 insurance policy.

The problem for the crew of the Alexander II came when they tried to scuttle the boat 80-plus miles off the Cape May, N.J., coast.

The boat wouldn’t sink.
