Fall boat preview - Sailboats - PART III

Island Packet 440, Swan 46, Beneteau 523, Gunboat 48, Lagoon 500

The cutter-rigged Island Packet 440 is a step down in size from last year’s center cockpit model, the 445. However, it retains the signature features of a Bob Johnson design: spacious staterooms and ample stowage, large tank capacities, simple rig (with Hoyt staysail boom), and long keel, as well as a 10-year warranty against deck core degradation. Island Packet targets coastal and offshore cruisers who plan to spend extended time on board.

Finnish builder Nautor’s Swan is appealing to upscale cruising sailors with the German Frers-designed Swan 46. The boat is available in two- and three-cabin layouts and with two keel configurations: fixed fin keel or a hydraulically adjustable daggerboard that extends the

draft from 4 feet, 4 inches with

the board up to more than 11 feet.

The daggerboard version also has twin rudders. With a fractional rig, non-overlapping jib and moderate sail area, the Swan 46 will be of interest to a high-end clientele with plans to do some short-handed cruising.

First introduced at the Salon Nautique de Paris last December as the replacement for the Beneteau 50, the Beneteau 523 will debut in the United States at this fall’s boat shows. Billed as an offshore cruiser, the 523 features a hand-laid structural grid that’s bonded

and glassed to the hull to

distribute loads evenly. She was designed by Groupe Finot and has a modern hull shape with a wide stern and large, twin-wheel cockpit, as well as spacious accommodations. A raised coach roof and panoramic deck lights create an airy and bright atmosphere in the saloon. The vessel is offered in two- and three-cabin versions, both with optional crew quarters forward.

Sailors for whom speed potential is an important consideration might take an interest in the Gunboat 48, the new smaller sister of the Gunboat 62. From the drawing board of performance multihull designers Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin, the boat features lightweight

sandwich construction with generous use of Kevlar and carbon fiber, promising speeds in excess of 20 knots. Hull No. 1 sailed from Cape Town, South Africa, to Newport, R.I., to become “the first boat ever to cross an ocean with all carbon fiber standing rigging,” according to Gunboat owner

Peter Johnstone.

Decidedly more on the luxurious side and continuing the successful concept of the Lagoon 440 is the Lagoon 500, a catamaran with flybridge, inside steering station, and a forward lounge cockpit. The boat has room for 10 and is touted as an ocean cruiser with an emphasis on comfort and performance. It is available in three- and four-cabin owner versions, as well as a five-cabin charter layout.
