The 6000th Flying Scot will be on display Jan. 27-30 at Chicago’s Strictly Sail boat show at the Navy Pier.
After the show it will be delivered to its new owner Dan Koules, who requested the number and ordered the boat more than two years ago. Koules sails out of Sheridan Shores Yacht Club in Wilmette, Ill., where Flying Scots are the most active fleet in club racing, the company said.
Koules said he loves racing his current Flying Scot, hull No. 5567.
“Buying the Scot is a nice opportunity to get out and race with them,” he said in a statement. “The Flying Scot also has a very strong class association, which I like.”
The Flying Scot was designed in 1957 by Gordon K. (Sandy) Douglass, who wanted to design a boat that was roomy, comfortable and stable and could be used for racing and cruising.
It was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 1998.
Harry Carpenter, the current builder, has been building Flying Scots since 1978 and has owned the Deer Park, Md.-based company with his wife, Karen, since 1991.
