Fatal act of kindness

APRIL 18 - A 21-year-old Texas man drowned during a fishing trip Sunday after he attempted to rescue his 8-week-old puppy that jumped overboard.

The man, who was from HughSprings, was fishing on Lake Wright Patman with his father when his basset hound puppy, Flash, jumped overboard, an Associated Press report says. The man followed the dog into the cold water, but apparently was not wearing a PFD.

The man managed to reach the puppy and held it over his head, the report says. Before the man’s father could put on a PFD and help, the man and dog had disappeared under the surface.

“He was caring and loving,” the man’s stepmother says in the report. “He had a heart of gold and would help anybody. He loved animals. That’s why he jumped in the water after his dog.”

Rescue teams scoured the lake but were unable to locate the man’s body, according to the report. Searchers did find the man’s shoes and recovered the dog’s body.
