Martin County Fire Rescue officials confirmed Thursday morning that the county's beaches would remain open despite the death Wednesday of a kiteboard surfer.

"The beaches are open and lifeguards are on duty as unusual," said Doug Killane, bureau chief of fire prevention with Martin County Fire Rescue and public information officer.

The attack was a quarter-mile off shore along an unguarded beach, officials with Martin County Sheriff's Office said.
