Feds seize Jean-Michel Cousteau's boat

Federal agents last Friday seized a $30,000 boat owned by famed oceanographer Jean-Michel Cousteau as part of a Department of Justice action for transgressions during the filming of spectacular orca attacks on Monterey Bay nine years ago.

Among the violations alleged against the 25-foot vessel, dubbed the Manfish, Cousteau's crew reportedly interrupted a hunting frenzy by driving too close to a gray whale carcass, even inadvertently backing over the dead calf while the killer whales were actively feeding.

Cousteau's attorney, Lee Stein, did not respond to requests for comment by the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
