Final plank to be installed on the Charles W. Morgan

The final plank will be installed on the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan at 2 p.m. on May 10, Mystic Seaport announced.

This plank, or “shutter plank,” completes the hull and is a significant milestone in the five-year restoration of the National Historic Landmark vessel and the last major phase of the work prior to her launch on July 21.

The 20-foot-long plank will be removed from a steam box used to heat the wood to make it flexible. The shipwrights will then lift the plank into position on the side of the ship, wedge it into position, and fasten it to the hull.
