The historic clubhouse at the Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston, R.I., was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. Flames shot into the air before 4 a.m. It took about two hours to bring the fire under the control in difficult conditions caused by a nor'easter.
No one was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Edgewood Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Rhode Island, dating to 1908. The historic building survived two hurricanes.
The club has been tested in the past. In 1954, seas kicked up by Hurricane Carol battered the club house, causing extensive water damage.
