First suit filed in Farallon yacht tragedy

The father of a young woman who was among five sailors who died during a sailboat race around California’s Farallon Islands filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the yacht's owner, who survived the ordeal.

Alexis Busch, 26, was among those lost after their boat, the 38-foot Low Speed Chase, was overwhelmed by waves April 14 while taking part in the Full Crew Farallones Race.

Three crewmembers survived, including boat owner James Bradford.

Busch's father filed the suit Tuesday in San Francisco Superior Court, seeking unspecified damages.

The lawsuit claims the crew should have known that breaking waves that "were tall enough, steep enough and powerful enough to capsize and wreck their vessel were likely to be rolling onto the 4-fathom shoal over which they were steering."
