The life of a 17-pound lobster estimated to be 80 years old that was destined for a pot of boiling water was spared Tuesday and instead is now back in Long Island Sound.
The lobster was caught somewhere in the waters of New England and then purchased by The Dock Restaurant in Waterford, Conn.
Local kids named him “Larry,” and a local businessman set him free.
"This lobster has seen World War I, World War II, seen the landing on the moon and the Red Sox win the World Series, he's made it this far in life," Don MacKenzie, vice president of Boats Inc., a full-service marina and boat dealer in Niantic, told The Day newspaper. "He deserves to live."
