A lone boater aboard his 17-foot Boston Whaler got caught in a ferocious storm on Chesapeake Bay when his outboard failed to start.
The 55-year-old high school baseball coach spends most summer Sundays tooling around on Eastern Bay, an expanse of open water near St. Michaels, Md.
With dark skies rolling in fast, he tried to fire up his engine and head for shore, but it wouldn't start. He pulled the cowling off the engine and saw that the starter piston was seized. As he pounded at it with a wrench, he saw two other boats anchoring about 500 yards away. He grabbed an air horn and gave a blast to get their attention. When it didn't work, he started shouting.
