Hands-on encounters with Sound marine life

Marine Life Study Cruises sponsored by The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Conn., will give participants a first-hand look at the animals living in Long Island Sound.

On each 2-1/2-hour cruise, aquarium educators involve participants in collecting marine life at multiple depths. An on-board video microscope provides a magnified look at the diversity of marine life. A “mud grab” opens up a hidden world of life and decay. And everyone helps inspect the trawl net’s harvest: usually a variety of crabs, fish, lobsters and a few surprises. Marine Life Study Cruises are offered: Weekends at 1 p.m. April 17 to June 27; 1 p.m. May 31 (Memorial Day); and 1 p.m. daily from July 1 to Aug. 31.

The fee is $17.50 ($15 for Maritime Aquarium members) for both adults and children. Infants and toddlers are not allowed on board for safety reasons. For information or reservations, call (203) 852-0700, Ext. 2206.
