Hurricane Irene on track for South Florida

The first hurricane of the Atlantic season is forecast to begin affecting South Florida late Thursday night into Friday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of early this morning, Hurricane Irene was about 90 miles west-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

The center of Irene will continue to move away from the north coast of Puerto Rico this morning and approach the northern coast of the Dominican Republic this afternoon and tonight, according to the hurricane center.

Some strengthening of the storm is forecast during the next 48 hours.
