‘Improper’ mooring has Maine man upset

Longtime boat captain John Ellis finds it hard to avoid getting emotional when he talks about the fight he's engaged in with the town of Wells, Maine over the mooring for his 40-foot whaler, the Deborah Ann.

"I don't want to lose it," he said of his most recent acquisition, the Deborah Ann, looking out over Wells Harbor on Oct. 1. The town has requested he remove the boat after police conducted an investigation and said it was "improperly" moored.

The investigation came in response to a complaint from fellow boat owner Bob Liston, who at a Sept. 9 Board of Selectmen meeting alleged Ellis had not followed the proper application process to receive a large-boat mooring.
