One of South Florida’s oldest annual fishing tournaments, The Key West Classic, has a new name and charity recipient.
The April 28 to May 1 tournament, a dual offshore-inshore event, will now be The Key West Classic, a Mercury Outboards Redbone@Large event. The Boomer Esiason Foundation along with Rich Products will also be among the major sponsors, with proceeds going to cystic fibrosis.
The change came about when longtime title sponsor Texaco was bought by Shell Oil, leaving the tournament’s financial support status in limbo. A second corporate tournament, the Key West Challenge, also sponsored by the oil company for mental health research would continue to be funded, but not the Classic. The events had raised more than $1.4 million for mental health causes.
