Jerry Pruitt captains the Delvin K., Chesapeake Bay's last working oyster buyboat.
Located near the Maryland-Virginia border, many of Tangier Island's 525 residents work on the water.
From December through February, Pruitt spends five days a week hauling oysters 16 miles across the bay to Reedville, a small town on the Great Wicomico River. The job, a buyboat captain, was once commonplace. No more.
"He's the last one doing this," said Wayne Campbell, a truck driver for Bevans Oyster Co., one of three Northern Neck seafood dealers that Pruitt sells to. "He's kind of like a dinosaur, I guess."
