Lauderdale drawbridges draw motorists' ire

The signs on the Andrews Avenue bridges say the drawbridges aren't supposed to go up at rush hour. In fact they say the bridges open on demand — with the exception of rush hour.

But rush-hour openings occur much more frequently over the fall and winter months, when many yachts return south to stay. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which is the last weekend in October, also leads to increased bridge openings.

"There's a lot more [boat] traffic. I've probably had to go through seven times myself this week," said Courtney Day, owner of Cape Ann Towing in Fort Lauderdale.
