Man dies in first high-speed boat race

A 56-year-old Washington state man died in the very first high-speed boat race he competed in after his hydroplane became airborne and flipped over as his family watched from the shore.

Investigators said at first it looked like the man, from Tacoma, had survived the 90 mph horror crash as he escaped the boat and signaled he was OK to officials.

But when a rescue team got to his boat seconds later, he had stopped breathing.
