Marina fire displaces boat dwellers

A dramatic nighttime fire drove two families from boats where they live at a Columbia River marina in the flight path of Portland (Ore.) International Airport.

John Cayne said he lived next door to the couple whose boat caught fire. He spotted flames under the walkway outside his boat and grabbed his wife, Cece Cayne, and children, Jessica, 10 and John Jr., 4. They all jumped into a dinghy to escape.

He said a tarp on his boat was burned, but his family got away without a scratch.

"I burned my bangs, that's about it," John Cayne said as passenger planes passed overhead and landed about 100 yards away.
