Marine school offers insider advice

SEPT. 7 --The InternationalYachtRestorationSchool in Newport, R.I., this fall will launch a new training program for people who want careers in the marine industry.

The program is a nine-day course offered in early October and tailored specifically, the school says in a release, for people without prior training. Topics covered will include tools and machinery use, safety procedures, coatings and applications, basic carpentry and diesel engine maintenance.

The school will hold an orientation and sign-up session Sept. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Newport campus of the Community College of Rhode Island, according to the release. The course will wrap up with advice on writing resumes and interviewing skills. Participants who successfully complete the course will also have an opportunity to interview with area employers.

The IYRS course is part of a larger state-wide initiative created by United Way of Rhode Island called “Skill Up Rhode Island,” the release says. To register for the orientation call (888) 616-JOBS.
