Mariners arrested after being rescued

When a North Korean-flagged freighter ran aground on a tiny island off Greece on Christmas Eve, the crew’s rescue played out as an uplifting holiday story on Greek television. Two days later, the freighter’s crewmembers were arrested.

Coast Guard personnel evacuated the eight-man Ukrainian crew during a storm and transported them to a hospital, according to Reuters news service. When the rescuers returned the next day to inspect the ship, they found it was carrying 35 tons of smuggled cigarettes, rather than the declared cargo of cement, Reuters reports.
