Mayor 'found on boat loaded with booze'

The mayor of Australia’s Palm Island, who is a vocal critic of the tough alcohol bans targeting Queensland's indigenous communities, was allegedly caught in a boat loaded with contraband liquor.

The Townsville Bulletin reported the boat was carrying 258 cans of mid-strength beer, 12 cans of pre-mixed spirits and a 375-ml bottle of bourbon.

Alf Lacey, who has regularly described alcohol restrictions as "racist" and "draconian," released a statement saying he would make no further comment while his lawyers "have a look at all legal remedies available to me.”
