‘Medicine for mariners’ courses offered

Offshore Sailing School and the Wilderness Medical Society plan to offer a unique way for doctors and health professionals to earn continuing medical education credits while learning to sail.

Health professionals will gather in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., May 8 to 13, 2005, for Medicine for Mariners. Three courses are offered: Learn to Sail, Performance Sailing and Bareboat Cruising Preparation.

Topics include hypothermia and cold water immersion, solar injury, drowning, hazardous marine life, on-board medical improvisation, marine medical kits, water purification, trauma management and seafood toxidromes.

The cost for the five-day session is $1,620 per person, double occupancy in a South Seas Harborside room for the Learn to Sail or Performance Sailing course, conducted on Colgate 26 sailboats; and $1,820 for Bareboat Cruising Preparation, conducted on a Hunter 36 yacht.
