On May 10, Mercury Marine confirmed that it will be launching five new electric product lines by 2023, including four electric outboards, at the Brunswick Corporation’s annual Investor’s Day. The electric outboards should launch by the first quarter of 2023, with the first arriving in 2022.

Mercury has had its foot in electric propulsion since 2020, when it released its Fathom 1 power management system for the Sea Ray SLX-R 400e. The lithium-ion battery pack could charge all of the boat’s accessories, eliminating the need for a generator on board. It will not be expanding this initiative even further, with its five new electric propulsion products launching across four different product segments.

“We intend for Mercury to be the market leader in both conventional and electric marine propulsion by the end of [2023]. Mercury won’t be slowing down anytime soon,” said Chris Drees, president of Mercury Marine, in his presentation to presenters.

Brunswick plans to test its electric products on the newly acquired Freedom Boat Club. It will be focusing on ideal electric applications, including low-speed cruising or short-term high-speed boating, and it has onboarded a team of 40 specialists to accelerate its electrification and autonomy initiatives. Boaters should expect to start seeing electric options from Mercury beginning next year.
